Being competent in a language implies having the following four basic language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading and listening belong to the receptive language skills, since the learners receive an input, while speaking and writing belong to the productive language skills, because the students produce an output.

Academic writing is an essential skill that helps learners cope with academic assignments in different courses. Written expression for 2nd year classes is a course which aims to particularly develop students' writing skills. It gives them the writing mechanics needed to write an effective essay on different organizational models. The course focuses on both parts and types of memory with intensive practice in and out of class. The essay writing process teaches a student how to research a topic and organize their thoughts into an introduction, body, and conclusion. Essay writing objectives apply to expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive essays on a variety of topics.
Written Expression for the L2 level is a course in the form of tutorials (TD) lasting one and a half hours (1h30) per week. Its program is thematically divided into two trimesters. In the first term, students will be introduced to different parts of essay writing, namely the introductory paragraph, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph. In addition, it will familiarize them with the essential elements of the essay including coherence, cohesion, unity and completeness. In the second term, students will practice writing the main types of essays (development methods), which include process, classification, cause/effect, compare/contrast, and persuasive (argumentative) essay.
